Unalaska, AK – This year's pollock season is getting a slow start and most of the fleet is still at the dock. Their waiting for the fish to school, and the wait has its ups and downs for the whole industry. KUCB's Anne Hillman has more.
Unalaska, AK – A man jumped overboard into the Bering Sea Thursday morning near Priest Rock, about 11 miles from Unalaska. The 40-year-old man was not wearing a survival suit and fellow crew members on the F/V Arctic Fox told the Coast Guard the he resisted any type of help.
"The crew threw a life ring to him, which came very close to him, but he did not make any attempt to grab it," said Coast Guard Public Affairs Officer Sara Francis. "Then the vessel deployed a swimmer in a gumby suit and he resisted that swimmer and dove into the water not to be seen again."

Unalaska, AK – A group in Unalaska recently made public their plans to build a short-term housing shelter for men in downtown Unalaska at the site of the old Elbow Room bar. Project planner Mark Horne said it will be a ten to 15-bed facility that allows men to sleep over night but does not allow drugs or alcohol or loitering during the day. Residents who live near the proposed site, like Suzi Golodoff, do not think it is a good location.
Unalaska, AK – Mariners working in the Aleutian Islands have more to worry about than just high seas and rough storms, they also have to think about the birds. KUCB's Anne Hillman has the story.
Unalaska, AK – City council met for a short meeting on Friday evening. In less than 45 minutes they discussed revenue projections for fiscal year 2010, authorized the city to issue the school bond, amended the FY09 budget and leased an area of tideland by Alaska Ship Supply for building a cold storage facility.
City Finance manager Tonya Miller explained that it's hard to predict revenue for the city because fish tax amounts vary so much from year to year. For fiscal year 2009 the budget and revenue were practically the same, but that was due to a number of large projects. City staff is projecting an increase in revenue for 2010 of about $2 million.

Unalaska, AK – The school board will meet tonight to discuss the possibility of enrolling local children in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. The program was started by the country singer in 1996 in Tennessee. Enrolled children ages birth to five receive a new book every month to read along with their parents. Superintendent John Conwell said it's an effective, simple way to help children develop.
