Coast Guard Medevacs Unalaska MSD Staffer

A member of the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment in Unalaska was medevacked to Anchorage Monday in critical condition.

The Coast Guard helicopter from the cutter Alex Haley took the MSD staffer to Cold Bay early Monday morning. There, the man was transferred to a commercial medevac and flown to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. Emergency room staff confirmed he arrived around 11 a.m. and is currently being treated.


Driver Faces Charges After "Drifting" Into Pond

A man is facing charges after an accident late Friday night sent his truck into the water near Unalaska lake.

No one was injured in the accident, but Deputy Police Chief Mike Holman says the driver is charged with reckless driving and driving without a license.

Holman says that driver, 21-year-old Brendan Muese, was returning home from the store shortly after 11 p.m. Friday when the accident happened. Muese was alone in his vehicle. He had allegedly been drinking, but Holman says he wasn’t legally considered intoxicated.


Strong Deep-Sea Quake Rattles Unalaska

If there’s an earthquake in the ocean and no one’s there to feel it, did it really happen? On Wednesday in the Aleutian Islands, the answer was yes.

A 6.1 magnitude quake coming from unusually deep underwater shook Nikolski and Unalaska around noon on Wednesday.

Natasha Ruppert of the Alaska Earthquake Information Center said the quake happened about 180 miles underwater, about 215 miles west of Unalaska.


Weekend Wind Gusts Top 100 MPH, Damage Buildings, Cars

A windstorm that lasted through the weekend did damage all over town in Unalaska, including to buildings at the airport, vehicles and road signs.

Several cars were damaged Friday afternoon as strong gusts of wind ripped debris off the state-owned, WWII-era torpedo building next to the long-term airport parking lot.

Ports director Peggy McLaughlin says five cars in the lot were struck by flying scraps of wood.


Flying Debris from Torpedo Building Damages Cars at Airport

Several cars were damaged Friday afternoon as strong gusts of wind ripped debris off the WWII-era torpedo building next to Tom Madsen Airport.

Both the high wind advisory and the Department of Public Safety’s category one travel advisory have been extended until midnight Friday night. 

The state-owned torpedo building overlooks the airport’s long-term parking lot. Ports director Peggy McLaughlin says five cars in the lot were struck by flying scraps of wood.


High Winds Prompt Travel Advisory, School Bus Cancellations

Some school buses are not running today and drivers are advised to use caution as high winds batter Unalaska.

The Department of Public Safety has issued a category one travel advisory through 4 p.m. Friday.

The buses to Westward and the Dutch Harbor side will not run today. School is in session until 2:05 at Eagle's View Elementary and 2:15 at the Unalaska City School.

Parents can pick their children up after school is dismissed at regular times. Those who aren't able to pick their children up are asked to notify the school so that school personnel can transport the children to their bus stops.

For high school students in remote towns like Unalaska, figuring out what to do after graduation can pose a special challenge.

Distance often makes it hard for colleges and other post-grad programs to connect with students in-person.

Now, Unalaska’s library is using technology to try and offer the next best thing. KUCB’s Annie Ropeik has the story.


Local Teen Receives Third Nod for Merchant Marines

An Unalaska teen has received his third congressional nomination to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

High school senior Dylan Magnusen was at the PCR Thursday night for pick-up soccer. He remembers that’s also where he was when he heard from Alaska Sen. Mark Begich with the news he’d received his first nomination for the Merchant Marines.

"I was actually lifting here, and then [recreation assistant] James [Gregory] comes up running. He’s like, ‘The senator’s on the phone!’ It’s like, what?!" he says, laughing.


Travel Advisory and Chain Authorization Continue

Update, 10 a.m. Monday: A Category 1 travel advisory is still in effect today in Unalaska amid snowy weather.

The Department of Public Safety also says trucks may continue to use chains on their tires.

Drivers should use caution and keep their headlights on at all times. Public Safety says blowing snow and snow accumulation are making roadways slippery and causing intermittent whiteout conditions.
