Unalaska, AK – Last Saturday was the Heart of the Aleutians festival, and sunny weather brought out a big crowd to enjoy the food, music, crafts, and games. Last year, the unpleasant weather caused for an smaller crowd and abbreviated the games, but weather this year was much better causing a larger turnout. KIAL's Monica Southworth Reports.
Unalaska, AK – Colder than average waters have been blamed for late salmon runs and might affect pollock distribution in the Bering Sea. The temperatures might impact crab stocks as well. Alaska Department of Fish & Game manager and researcher Doug Pengilly says that cold water can affect where some types of crab are and potentially how big they can get.
"For the opilio, as you go further north, they tend to mature at a smaller size," he says. "Maybe their growth per molt is less or maybe they're just maturing at a younger instar, but for what ever reason when they molt for maturity at a smaller size, that's as big as they get. So they may not be molting even to legal size."
Unalaska, AK – Vehicles began using the new Bridge to the Other Side today. Department of Transportation project engineer Sean Combs says the unofficial opening puts the bridge to use as a detour route while the construction crew finishes up the paving.
"Our pavement markers and our asphalt are temperature sensitive so we'll have to switch traffic back and forth just to make sure that we have a finished project that's going to last," he says.
Unalaska, AK – Tuesday night the city council continued a discussion on eliminating sales tax on food and residential heating fuel. The city takes in about $570,000 in sales tax annually for these items. Council members say they are considering the option because they want to make living in the area more affordable. But City Manager Chris Hladick says that may not be the best way to help residents.

Unalaska, AK – Westward Seafoods has sold 163,000 pounds of Eastern District Brown Crab quota to the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Community Development Association (APICDA) to be processed in Atka. Westward, like many Unalaska processors, is at its quota cap and cannot legally process the crab. Unalaska Crab Incorporated, a non-profit headed by the mayor and the city council that represents the city's interests, voted Saturday to allow the quota transfer out of the community.
Unalaska, AK – The ash cloud from Kasatochi Volcano has drifted over 1650 miles into the flight paths of aircraft in Anchorage and caused more than 50 flight cancellations Sunday and Monday. The oval shaped ash cloud was 300 miles at its widest point and moving around 39,000 to 40,000 feet in the air. This is an old ash cloud emitted during the initial eruption last Thursday. Alaska Volcano Observatory scientist Chris Waythomas says the ash might cause more delays over the next few days and that Kasatochi may not be through erupting.
Unalaska, AK – The Ring of Fire is active again. Kasatochi volcano, near Adak, erupted Thursday afternoon after a series of earthquakes. It's the third one to erupt within a month. A different set of quakes rocked Unalaska Wednesday night. KIAL's Anne Hillman found out what all of this seismic activity means.
