Public Hearing on City Pay Raises Set for December

City council pushed several items from their agenda Tuesday night to their next meeting after the Thanksgiving holiday. That meeting will be Dec. 17. It’ll include a public hearing on wage increases for Title 3 employees.

Council voted to revisit the proposed increases and the larger overhaul in the works for the city’s pay range matrix at that hearing. The Title 3-specific ordinance also includes a proposed $7,000 budget increase for the airport.


Council Moves Forward on Small Boat Harbor Float Designs

City council approved a new contract to finish redesigning C float at the Bobby Storrs Boat Harbor at their meeting Tuesday night.

The contract is with PND Engineers for $515,000. PND has been a part of the redesign process since January.

Port director Peggy McLaughlin told the council that their preferred design for C float is a straight, linear pontoon float with no fingers off the side.


Council to Discuss Small Boat Harbor Redesign

City council will go over new designs for floats at the Bobby Storrs Boat Harbor at their meeting tonight.

The city got a state grant in 2012 to redesign the harbor, but the money won’t kick in until designs are complete. PND Engineering has been heading up the redesign process. The council will vote on a new $515,000 contract with PND to finalize the C float design and start working on designs for the A and B floats.


Planning Commission Approves Residential Use for Former Elbow Room Building

The planning commission passed a resolution Thursday to allow for an apartment in the old Elbow Room property in downtown Unalaska.

The conditional use permit goes to the owners of the building, a ministry group known as Alexandria House. They already have a commercial use permit for the first floor; now, they hope to put a tenant on the second floor.


City Hires New Finance Director

After almost a year of searching, Unalaska has a new finance director. Patricia Soule will fill the position starting in January.

Unalaska Human Resources director Kelly Stiles says Soule was one of two finalists for the job, out of about 10 applicants total.

"We didn’t have a lot of applications at first when we first posted the job, which we kind of assumed we wouldn’t," Stiles says. "Governmental accounting is kind of a niche field, and we were looking for someone very particular."


Dinner Raises $20,000 For Typhoon Relief

Residents braved chilly weather on Saturday for a home-cooked Filipino dinner -- and a chance to support the local Fil-Am Association's typhoon relief efforts.

The line spilled out the door at the Burma Road Chapel. While it was cold and drizzly outside, there were piles of hot adobo, rice and egg rolls to be had inside, all prepared and served by members of the Fil-Am Association.


'Big Blue' Fire Truck Departs Unalaska for St. George

A big blue fire truck is on its way from Unalaska to the Pribilof island of St. George.

The truck has been ready to go for almost a year, but until now, the two communities had no way to move it.
