Kodiak, AK – A major jump in the amount of salmon bycatch taken by the Bering Sea pollock fleet has fishery regulators looking at tougher restrictions. KMXT's Casey Kelly reports.
On Sunday, residents of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor bid farewell to one of the most notorious drinking establishments in modern Alaskan history. It used to be called the Elbow Room, a bar that was synonymous with the high-rolling, often violent culture of Bering Sea crab fishing in the late 70s and early 80s. It was renamed Latitudes in its final years, and remained a local institution until it closed once and for all this weekend. KIAL's Charles Homans stopped by for the bar's last hurrah on Saturday night, and filed this story.
Unalaska, AK – Preliminary results from Monday's election show David Gregory defeating Randall Baker by a wide margin in the runoff for City Council Seat D.
Gregory received 345 votes, or 69.4 percent of the total ballots cast. Baker, who led Gregory in the four-way regular election last month, received less than half of that, with 152 votes and 30.6 percent.
The runoff results amounted to a leap from behind for Gregory, who picked up 39 votes less than Baker in the October 2 general election. Baker, on the other hand, received about 100 fewer votes this time around.

Unalaska, AK – An Unalaska resident is planning to file an ethics complaint with the Alaska Public Offices Commission later this week over this month's city elections.
Jeff Hancock said he's preparing one and possibly more complaints over Mayor Shirley Marquardt's conduct in the run-up to the October 2 elections. The complaint stems from an e-mail sent by Marquardt on August 29 to two seafood industry executives concerning union organizing activities in Unalaska. Several local unions were supporting Shannon Morrison, Marquardt's challenger in the election, who she beat by a margin of just five votes.
Unalaska, AK – The second Bering Sea pollock season of the year wraps up tomorrow, and it's been a difficult one. In Unalaska, KIAL's Charles Homans reports.
Unalaska, AK – After 16 months in office, Rocky Caldero is stepping down from the Unalaska City Council.
Caldero announced his decision today, and will be formally notifying the mayor and council on Thursday. He said he's vacating his seat because one way or another, his plans require him to move away from Unalaska. He's leaving his job as the operations manager at UniSea's Unalaska plant, where he has worked for 15 years, in order to take a job at Sea Bear, a small seafood company in Anacortes, Wash.
Unalaska, AK – For centuries, the lives of the mostly Native residents of the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea have been shaped by outsiders. In the 19th Century, it was Russian fur traders and the American government. In the late 20th Century, it was animal rights activists who fought to end the seal harvest there. The most recent visitor is the international environmental organization Greenpeace, which is trying to rally support on the Pribilofs for sweeping conservation measures in the Bering Sea. But to do that, the group has to overcome its own complicated history on the islands. KIAL's Charles Homans recently visited the Pribilof Island of St. Paul with Greenpeace and filed this report.
Unalaska, AK – Halloween is nearly upon us, and in honor of the holiday, the Unalaska Diver's Association is hosting its first annual underwater pumpkin carving contest this Sunday.
Local diver Brandon Hunter said that's pretty much exactly what it sounds like.
"Most people tend to hollow their pumpkin out above water," he said. "And then using whatever tools you have available, you take the pumpkin underwater and carve it up."
