Unalaska, AK – Bryce Edgmon is the Democratic candidate for House District 37. The challenger from Dillingham beat incumbent Carl Moses in a coin toss held at 2 p.m. in Anchorage, bringing an end to a month of recounts and court challenges. The toss was overseen by officials from the state Division of Elections, and both candidates were present. Edgmon will now face Republican nominee Ron Bowers in the general election on November 7.

Unalaska, AK – A federal agency will be holding a public hearing on proposed oil and gas development in Bristol Bay on Monday evening in Unalaska.
The Minerals Management Service will be taking comments on its Draft Environmental Impact Statement for a five-year leasing plan that would open up part of the North Aleutian Basin to offshore oil drilling. The area in question, known as Lease Sale 92, was bought back by the federal government in 1988 and kept off the market because of concerns over impacts that drilling could have on the Bristol Bay salmon fisheries, and drilling there remains controversial for that reason.
Unalaska, AK – A 32-year-old man was arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing more than $1,000 worth of whiskey and rum from an Unalaska liquor store earlier this month.
A criminal complaint filed with the District Court in Unalaska alleges Kenneth Harber stole two cases of Jack Daniels whiskey and one case of Ronrico Rum from the Alaska Ship Supply Liquor Store sometime between Sept. 6 and Sept. 9, prying the plywood door off a storage container behind the business. A manager at the UniSea Sports Bar and a fishing boat captain both told public safety officers that a man who matched Harber's description had attempted to sell them the whiskey shortly after the theft occurred. Both men turned down the offer.
Unalaska, AK – As of this morning, Carl Moses and Bryce Edgmon are finally, definitively locked in a tie in the race for the Democratic nomination in House District 37. The primary will be decided by a coin toss in Anchorage on Monday. The coin toss will take place at 2 p.m. in the Wilda Marston Theater at Lusak Library, and both Edgmon and Moses will be present. Unalaska, AK – The House District 37 Democratic Primary apparently is tied yet again. A campaign staffer for Carl Moses says the Superior Court has overturned three of the initially rejected over-vote ballots, or ballots where more than one oval was partially marked. Two of them go to challenger Bryce Edgmon and one goes to Moses, bringing both candidates' vote totals to 766.
Moses Chief of Staff and campaign staffer Adam Berg, who was at the Superior Court hearing this afternoon, says the court also overturned the rejection of two special needs ballots, which are being flown to Juneau and will be opened Friday. Those ballots could make the difference for either candidate, or they could result in a further tie.
Unalaska, AK – The Museum of the Aleutians will open its first international exhibit at 7 p.m. on Friday. The exhibit, called "Creation of the World, Its Structure and Its Inhabitants," will display artifacts and artwork from the Koryak, the native people of Kamchatka.
Museum Director Zoya Johnson says that the exhibit is a fitting one for Unalaska, because of the history that has been shared by people on both sides of the Bering Sea.
Unalaska, AK – Another crime has been added to the list of charges that a California man is facing following a fatal van accident Friday night.
Victorio Cabrera will face the misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident in addition to his previous three felony charges and one misdemeanor charge relating to the incident, in which passenger Alan Fulinara was killed. The most serious of the charges, second-degree murder, carries a minimum sentence of 10 years.
