Army corps to conduct remedial investigation on Umnak Island

Unalaska, AK – This summer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting a remedial investigation at Fort Glenn, a former defense site on Umnak Island.

Fort Glenn was used as an army airfield and defense garrison during World War II, and reports have suggested that the island might be contaminated with mustard gas and other materials used for warfare. This summer, the Army Corps of engineers will look for areas where chemical warfare materials might have been stored through environmental sampling. It's the first time the corps has done this sort of work since 2004.


Three Unalaska students place at Native Youth Olympics

Unalaska, AK – This weekend, three Unalaska students placed at the annual Native Youth Olympics in Anchorage. In the girls' toe kick, junior Shayla Shaishnikoff placed third, with a height of 50 inches. Meanwhile, junior Jeremy Ugale placed fifth in the boys' category with a kick of 80 inches. Freshman Dylan Magnusen took fifth in the kneel jump, with a distance of 51.5 inches.

Babbi Goodwin is one of the coaches of this year's NYO team. She says that she only expects them to get better, since the team is only losing one senior.


District 37 expected to grow under state board proposals

Unalaska, AK – This week, members of the state redistricting board visited Unalaska for input on the drawing of District 37.

Board chair John Torgerson led the meeting, and he explained that the board aims to have 17,500 people in each legislative district. He adds that low population numbers in rural Alaska in last year's census means districts that will cover a wider portion of the state.


Plea agreement reached in drug bust case

Unalaska, AK – Another case related to last year's drug bust has wrapped up.

Last week, Cory Merrifield, 22, was sentenced to five years in prison, with two and half suspended, along with three years probation for misconduct involving a controlled substance. He was also sentenced to 180 days, with 120 suspended, for violating the conditions of his release. All other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Vehicle goes off embankment near Little Priest Rock

Unalaska, AK – Last night, Unalaska experienced its third major motor vehicle accident in six weeks.

David Harrell, 23, was allegedly speeding on the way back from Summer Bay just after 10pm when the Isuzu Rodeo he was driving went off the road near Little Priest Rock. The car fell more than 10 feet and flipped, injuring Harrell and the two passengers with him.

While Harrell and one of the passengers needed to be ambulanced to the clinic for care, no one involved in the accident suffered any major injuries according to Sgt. Mike Holman.


City council focuses on ports management

Unalaska, AK – Yesterday evening, city council hashed out a number of issues related to the future of the ports and harbors department.

Ports director Alvin Osterback addressed the council for approximately an hour, and he discussed the status of the ports enterprise fund, best management practices for the Carl E. Moses small boat harbor, and the new harbor's plans for operations and oil spill response.

APL crane up and running

Unalaska, AK – The American President Lines crane is finally operative. A cargo vessel offloaded at the dock this afternoon.

The old APL crane went down during a storm in December of 2009. While the replacement crane arrived in August, it wasn't powered until April 1, according to APL spokesperson Mike Zampa. APL spent then spent this month testing the crane and awaiting certification.
