Unalaska, AK – Starting this week, Unalaska residents will be able to apply for a TWIC card just by going to the local library. TWIC stands for Transportation Worker Identification Credential, and it gives approved individuals access to high-security, federally regulated facilities and vessels.
A TWIC card is needed for employment at many industrial facilities in Unalaska, but for the past three years, the closest TWIC office has been located in Anchorage. Because the application process takes two trips, the cost of getting a card was huge, says Mayor Shirley Marquardt.

Unalaska, AK – On Saturday, about 75 people gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new powerhouse. The generators at the new powerhouse have been online for a couple of months now, and the event gave city employees a chance to relax, eat cake, and mark the official end to a years-long project.
The project cost $53 million, which paid for the construction of a 16,000 square foot facility and new equipment, like two Wartsila engines capable of producing over 10 megawatts of energy. Public Utilities Director Dan Winters says that the new powerhouse is much more efficient than the World War II-era one next door.

Unalaska, AK – Depending on who's saying it, the term "V-Day" can refer to pretty different events. During World War II, V-Day meant "Victory Day," and to some lovebirds it serves as shorthand for Valentine's Day.
But the V-Day that people have been talking about here in Unalaska this past week doesn't have anything to do with either of these things. V-Day isn't just a single day - it's a worldwide movement meant to raise awareness of violence against women and girls, and to help stop it. KUCB's Alexandra Gutierrez has more.

Unalaska, AK – In response to the political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, Gov. Sean Parnell called for energy development in Alaska while in Washington this week.
Parnell addressed to the National Press Club this morning, and he said that domestic oil production was both an economic issue and a matter of national security.
"Let's face it: We're dependent upon an open, free-flowing Suez Canal, a canal through an unstable region - the security of which has been purchased with our tax dollars for decades," said Parnell.
