Unalaska’s annual 4th of July Parade kicked off at noon on Saturday, July 4th. This year, the City of Unalaska Department of Parks, Culture, and Recreation registered an impressive twenty-five floats. The parade, led by the United States Coast Guard, traveled down East Broadway from Alyeska to Eagle’s View Elementary. Hundreds of community members packed the downtown Unalaska streets in order to see the floats and enjoy awesome candy and prizes. Trophies were awarded to several outstanding floats. Unisea won most patriotic float, Sergei Krukoff won most original float, and IFHS won best representation of the parade theme, "O'fish'ally Local, "Crab" Your Mates and Celebrate.” Thanks to the Unalaska community for making this year’s 4th of July Parade a success!

Sideways Rain by Dr. Nancy Sydnam
On Friday June 27, 2014, the Unalaska Public Library hosted a book reading and signing with Dr. Nancy Sydnam. Dr. Sydnam's memoir, Sideways Rain, chronicles the twenty years she spent overseeing medical clinics in the Aleutians, including Unalaska and Dutch Harbor. The book includes personal journals and photographs in addition to Dr. Sydnam’s reflections on changes within the community. Former patient and long-time friend, Diddy Hitchins, also participated in the presentation. Hitchins was filling in for Dr. Sydnam's editor, Jackie Pels, who created the presentation for the book's launch back in February 2013. Pels was unable to attend the reading, so Dr. Sydnam contacted Hitchins because she was eager to bring the presentation to Unalaska.
