Suspicious Person/Activity

Officers responded to a report that a sleeping bag that covered or contained a person-shaped object(s) had been in the cab of a pickup truck for several days. No movement had been observed when the truck was moved or knocked upon. Officers responded and confirmed that the sleeping bag-covered object(s) looked suspiciously person-shaped. Upon opening the truck door and moving the sleeping bag, officers were relieved to find only some assorted bags and loose items.

A caller who phoned 911 and then hung up advised a dispatcher that he wished to “come clean” and that he and his friend were standing outside preparing to urinate. The caller then advised that was no emergency and he was not in need of assistance. Officers responding to the area did not locate anyone in need of assistance.

Assault

Officers responded to a local hotel regarding a fight that had just taken place. Investigation indicated that one pair of men were haranguing another pair, and were somewhat reluctant to cease their ranting and aggressive behavior. One of the victims took it upon himself to terminate the badgering by striking the primary assailant in the face. None of those involved wished to pursue charges.

Officers responded to a local bunkhouse regarding a fight between two employees. The victim claimed to have been struck in the forehead and said he was suffering from severe headaches as a result of the blow. Witnesses and the suspect told police the suspect had knocked the victim’s hard hat off, but had not struck the victim in the face. No charges filed.

EMS personnel were toned out for a report that a vehicle had gone into the water, but were stood down after officers on scene advised there were no injuries.

Fire personnel responded to a report that a vehicle had gone into the bay. No extrication services were needed. USCG was subsequently notified of a minor spill.
DUI

Taxi driver reported finding two people crawling out of a truck which had gone into the water along Captain’s Bay Road. The responding officer arrived to find one of the two occupants stumbling up the embankment and on to the roadway. Within a few seconds, Mark A. Mendes, Jr. told the responding officer that he had consumed a large quantity of alcohol, and had been the person driving the truck. Mendes Jr. was subsequently arrested on charges of Driving under the Influence and Driving while License Suspended/Revoked.

Report concerning possible possession of child pornography. Subsequent investigation concluded that available evidence did not support this conclusion.

Caller reported a tractor-trailer driver was driving his vehicle while using headphones. An officer contacted the company manager and advised of both the problems and the penalties associated with such use.
