200th Anniversary celebration of the arrival of Father John Veniaminov (Saint lnnokenty) to Unalaska, Alaska. This joyous celebration will also mark Father John's first Divine Liturgy served in Unalaska.
Widely known as a gifted linguist, scholar, wood carver, iconographer, scientist, educator, and author, Father John spent a large part of his life bringing the good news of Christ to the good peoples of Alaska. In recognition of his tireless apostolic labors, Father John, the enlightener of the Aleuts eventually became lnnokenty, MetroPolitan of Moscow. In 1977, he was canonized Saint Innocent (Innokenty) by the Orthodox Church in America.
A special celebration commemorating this historic event will begin on August 16, 2024 at the most beautiful National Historic Landmark in Unalaska, Saint lrmokenty's own Holy Ascension of our Lord Cathedral.
