Unalaska, AK – About a dozen flights in and out of Dutch Harbor airport have been cancelled because of ash from the Okmok volcano, which started erupting on Saturday around noon. PenAir President Danny Seybert says they've scheduled seven flights for today, Wednesday, to make up for yesterday's cancellations. He said cancellation decisions depend on cloud cover as well as ash.
"If there's a heavy cloud cover and we have to fly through lots of clouds, we're more likely to cancel the flight because you can't see the ash when it's embedded in the clouds, he said."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Oscar Dyson left for the Russian border Thursday afternoon to complete a pollock survey. It was supposed to be joined by the Miller Freeman. But the Freeman had to stay behind. KIAL's Anne Hillman found out why and what they'll be up to when they do head out.

Unalaska, AK – Okmok volcano on Umnak Island erupted suddenly over the weekend causing 10 people to be evacuated from the Fort Glenn ranch. The ash cloud floated more than 60 miles east to dust Unalaska and beyond. KIAL's Anne Hillman has the story.
Unalaska, AK – The mouth of McLees Lake in Reese Bay will be closed to subsistence salmon fishing for longer than normal this season. Because of poor sockeye salmon returns into the lake, the 500 yard area around the outlet stream will remain closed until further notice. Aleutians Area Management Biologist Aaron Poetter says to date, only 7,000 fish have passed through the weir, which is well below the 5 year average.
Unalaska, AK – During a short city council meeting Tuesday night the council heard the first reading of a school bond ordinance. The ordinance suggests putting a $4.5 million dollar general obligation bond on the October ballot. The money would be used to fix the Jr./Sr. High School's roof and other improvements. If the bond passes, the state would reimburse the city for 70% of the principle and its interest. That means Unalaska would pay only $2.3 million over 20 years. Unalaska currently has $5.7 million in bond debt for other school projects, including the original swimming pool and the elementary school.
Unalaska, AK – Long time resident Terry Quirk is leaving Unalaska for Homer next week. She lived here for 13 years, and although she's sad to leave, she's excited for the new adventure. KIAL's Monica Southworth has more.
