City council considers school bond

Tuesday, July 08 2008

Unalaska – Unalaska's City Council will open discussions on a potential school bond election at their meeting tonight. It's the first reading of an ordinance that suggests putting a $4.5 million general obligation bond on the October ballot. The money would be used to fix the Jr./Sr. High School's roof, expand the kitchen facilities, replace flooring, and complete energy and safety upgrades. If the bond passes, the state would reimburse the city for 70% of the bond and its interest. That means the city would pay $2.3 million over 20 years. The city currently has $5.7 million in bond debt from other school projects. The Council meets tonight at 7 pm at City Hall.

Beached bird survey in Unalaska Sunday

Wednesday, July 02 2008

Unalaska, AK – The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team is inviting people to contribute to climate change research by walking the beach to look for dead birds and bird parts. The program surveys beaches in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska to monitor changes in climates and ecosystems.

"In essence you have citizen scientists and volunteers that are walking the beaches determining how many birds are there on a normal, once-a-month type of time line," said Reid Brewer, the Unalaska organizer. "Over time you start to get a picture of what a natural rate of deposition is."

Owners of Alaska Ranger try to limit their liability

Tuesday, July 01 2008

Unalaska, AK – Victims of the Alaska Ranger and their families are trying to claim damages against the ship's owner, the Fishing Company of Alaska. In response, the FCA is trying to invoke a 1851 law that says the claimants can only ask for an amount that's less than the worth of the vessel at the end of its voyage. In this case, the FCA says the 184-foot fishing trawler that now sits at the bottom of the Bering Sea is worth nothing.
