Friday, October 08 2010

The mysteries of Alaska

Thursday, October 07 2010

Unalaska, AK – Stan Jones is a writer based in Anchorage, but he's lived all across the state of Alaska. He's the author of the Nathan Active mystery novels, which are set in a village modeled after Kotzebue. He has also co-authored a book about the Valdez oil spill. He's in Unalaska this week, talking about his series and hosting a writer's workshop.

Before coming out here, he chatted with KUCB about his books, about his favorite Alaskan authors, and why exactly it's such a challenge to write about this state.

NMFS holding ground on Steller sea lion plan

Thursday, October 07 2010

Unalaska, AK – An official from the National Marine Fisheries Service announced Wednesday that they would not be adopting the North Pacific Fishery Management Council's alternative plan for Steller sea lion management. The council had hoped that NMFS would consider relaxing the proposed restrictions and reducing the potential closures, but - with few exceptions - NMFS is moving ahead with the plan announced in August.

St. Paul Tribal Government to study diet of Steller sea lions

Wednesday, October 06 2010

Unalaska, AK – In Anchorage, attendees at the North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting have spent past the week worrying about Steller sea lions. They've been waiting to hear if the National Marine Fisheries Service will put in place major fishing restrictions to protect the endangered species and wondering how strict those measures will be.

But in the Pribilof Islands, there has only been good news about the Steller sea lions coming from NMFS. The agency is awarding $158,000 to the St. Paul tribal government as part of the Species Recovery Grants to Tribes program.

Lower quota but higher prices for red king crab

Tuesday, October 05 2010

Unalaska, AK – Tonight, representatives from the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game gather for the annual Bering Sea Crab Industry meeting in Anchorage. The purpose of the meeting is to go over the quotas for the various types of crab in the Bering Sea and then explain why those numbers are what they are.

But in Unalaska, there doesn't seem to be too many questions. The Department of Fish and Game announced the figures last week, and mostly, they're as fishermen expected. The quota for opilio crab went up 13% to 54.3 million pounds, and the total allowable catch for Bristol Bay red king crab this year is 14.8 million pounds which is a 7.5% drop from 2009. Jake Gull and Sean Rhodes are deckhands on the vessel the Bering Sea, and they say they're not shocked by that.

Candidates get out the vote

Monday, October 04 2010

Unalaska, AK – Tomorrow, Unalaska residents will vote for their preferred candidates - which means it's been a busy week for everyone running for City Council or for mayor. While this campaign season has been quieter than previous years, candidates are still doing what they can to get out the vote.

Jessica Culp is one of three candidates for City Council Seat C, and she was one of the first to put signs up around the community explaining her platform. She hopes that maybe that will help give her an edge.

Friday, October 01 2010

Unalaska, AK – Last night, candidates for city council and for mayor gathered at the Burma Road Chapel to share their visions for the community.

The forum opened with statements from the three candidates for City Council Seat C. Roger Rowland, who is the incumbent, touted his record as a councilmember and spoke about the work that the municipal government has done for the city's economic future. When asked about short- and long-term goals for the economy, he spoke about how the city needs to pay attention to other fisheries beyond pollock, and he said that it is crucial for the city to invest in projects like the new power plant that will bring in other businesses.

A wreck removed

Friday, October 01 2010

Unalaska, AK – While you might have missed it if you were watching the candidates forum last night, National Geographic featured a special episode on the removal the vessel the Ocean Clipper from the Pribilof Islands. The vessel ran aground on St. Paul Island in 1987, and it was removed this spring by Magone Marine Incorporated. KUCB's Alexandra Gutierrez has more.
