The Unalaska Raiders made a strong showing this weekend at two state championship tournaments in Anchorage.
The girls’ volleyball team overcame an early loss against Koliganek to shut out Hooper Bay. The Raiders notched another victory against Kenny Lake, finishing in fourth place overall.
Unalaska has been a strong performer in the 2A Borealis conference over the last few years. The Raiders took second place in 2013 after a hard-fought game against Su Valley. But Su Valley was absent from the state finals this weekend. The championship title went to Klawock.
Two Raiders cross country teams are on their way to states this weekend after big wins at their Region 1-South meet in Bristol Bay.
Junior Ross Enlow won the boys’ race for the second year in a row at regionals last weekend. And senior Christian Escalante came in second in the girls’ race.
The Raiders took the best overall boys’ and girls’ scores at the meet, beating out Dillingham and sending Unalaska's teams to the state meet for the first time in several years.

Unalaska’s Native Youth Olympics team took home gold medals, a new world record and a second-place finish at the state competition in Anchorage last week.

Unalaska's Raider wrestling squad wrapped up their season at state finals in Anchorage this weekend.
Seniors Dylan Magnusen and Rainier Marquez both finished in the top five for their weight classes. Magnusen won third place in the 182-pound division, while Marquez took fourth place wrestling at 113 pounds.
In all, seven Unalaska Raiders qualified for the championships after finishing in the top four at regionals in November.
The Unalaska Raider volleyball team beat Craig High School in the semi-final round of 2A state championships.
That means the Raiders are moving on to the last round of state finals Saturday night -- and they'll be competing against their conference rivals for the championship title.
The Raiders be playing Su Valley, just as they did at state finals in 2012. Su Valley walked away with the win last year.

The Raiders defeated Glennallen High School in four sets Thursday afternoon. The team will now move on to semi-finals Friday evening. The Unalaska Raiders will play the winner of a match between Craig High School and Koliganek.
The match will be broadcast live on KUCB 89.7 FM starting at 5 p.m.
Seven Unalaska wrestlers have earned a trip to state finals.
The Raiders competed at the Great Alaska conference meet this weekend in Dillingham. To be eligible to move on to the state championships, wrestlers had to finish in the top four in their weight class.
Gabe Kochuten, Rainier Marquez, Tommy Nguyen, Tristan Waldron, Kim Gumera, and Dylan Magnusen all made the cut, with Magnusen winning first place in the 182-pound division. Trey Henning placed fifth in his weight class. Henning was moved up to a state berth after the fourth-place finisher in his class was disqualified, says coach Steven Gregory.
