Child Sexual Abuse Trial Begins

The trial of a local fisherman accused of sexually abusing his young daughters began Wednesday in Unalaska.

Michel Bain, 39, faces eight felony charges, ranging from incest to penetration of a minor under 13. The alleged abuse occurred when the children were living with their father in Unalaska -- from 2006 to 2008.

Authorities were not notified of the alleged abuse until 2010. The children had moved out of state and were living with a different relative when they told that adult that Bain had molested them. Police in that state handled the initial investigation, and arranged for both children to be questioned about the alleged incidents of sexual abuse in Unalaska.


Jury Selection Begins in Sexual Abuse Trial

Jury selection is underway in the trial of a local fishing captain, who’s accused of sexually assaulting his young daughters.

Michel Bain, 39, allegedly abused his two biological daughters between 2006 and 2008. During that period, the girls were living with their father in Unalaska.

The trial is expected to begin later this week. Bain faces five felony charges for first degree sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13, involving penetration. He's also charged with two counts of incest and one count of second-degree sexual assault of a victim under 13.


Police Make 16th Arrest in Drug Investigation

UPDATE: Unalaska police have arrested another person in connection with alleged drug sales, and levied more charges against suspects who are already in custody.

Tanya Kukahiko-Schaaf, 41, has been charged with a class C felony for allegedly letting her home or car be used to distribute a controlled substance. 


As Drug Investigation Continues, Nine Defendants Appear in Court

The nine men who were arrested this week in Unalaska and charged with felony drug offenses have made their first appearances in court.

On Friday afternoon, police led Lua Aiava, 28, Allan Bautista, 44, Neuthon Costantini, 28, Ioane Faasavalu, 25, Tofa Matautia, 28, Ernie Oxinio, 30, Brandon Rosa, 21, Tyson Rosa, 24, and Stephen A. Rosa, 49, into the Unalaska courthouse.

The court gallery was packed with more than 20 friends, family, and members of the public.


Police Arrest Nine People in Wide Drug Sweep

Police performed a two-day sweep in Unalaska this week as part of an ongoing investigation into meth and heroin sales.

Public safety director Jamie Sunderland says the operation follows from an undercover drug sting conducted over the past few months. Officers used information from those cases -- and, once again, from a confidential informant.

"That has led to the arrest of nine additional people," Sunderland says.


Drug Investigation Nets Nine More Arrests

Nine people were arrested in Unalaska Wednesday during a day-long drug bust. 

Deputy Police Chief Michael Holman says the operation started around 12:45 p.m. and concluded around midnight. Officers executed ten search warrants, following up on new leads from an undercover investigation into drug sales over the last few months.

Unalaska police have arrested another man in connection to alleged sales of black tar heroin. Thirty-one-year-old Christopher Cordell was arrested this weekend and arraigned Sunday afternoon.

Cordell is being charged with a class A felony. According to court documents, Cordell rented a room at the UniSea Inn earlier this month. He allegedly let 24-year-old Michael Hindman to stay with him.


Five Arrested in Undercover Drug Sting

Five people are facing felony drug charges after being arrested Tuesday.

Unalaska police say they’ve been conducting an undercover investigation for the past four months, which allegedly revealed sales of black tar heroin and crystal meth in town.

Beginning around noon Tuesday, police arrested Michael Hindman, 24, Jana Lekanoff, 25, Daylen Luff, 29, Eric Roach, 45, and Zane Zueger, 25. Roach was arrested for allegedly selling meth, and the others are accused of selling heroin, or possessing it with the intent to sell.


Man Faces Charges for Allegedly Kicking Police Officer

A 25-year old-man is facing charges for allegedly assaulting an Unalaska police officer.  

According to court documents, an officer found an unconscious man in the parking lot of the Dutch Harbor Mall around 1 in the morning on August 25. The man, who was identified as Mark Evangelista, was unresponsive and smelled of alcohol.

The officer called an ambulance and brought Evangelista to the clinic. He regained consciousness and was medically cleared to go to jail. As two police officers prepared to help Evangelista up, the man kicked Sgt. Roger Bacon in the groin.
