It was almost impossible to make out the Coast Guard cutter Munro as it sat at the municipally owned dock on Friday afternoon.

The white ship disappeared behind blowing snow. But the line of red SUVs and ambulances from Unalaska’s fire department stuck out like a sore thumb.

They were waiting for an off-duty police officer to open fire on the cutter Munro.

A man is facing a felony charge for giving marijuana to an Unalaska teenager, on the eve of the drug’s legalization in the state.

Marcos Flores, 23, was arrested last week after police got a call from a local parent who said his daughter was in possession of marijuana.

The 16-year-old girl told police that Flores had given her the marijuana, plus a THC concentrate called wax. Police chief Jamie Sunderland says he’s never seen the substance in Unalaska before -- though it's the kind of product that could soon crop up in marijuana shops elsewhere in the state.

Sand Point Man Receives 13-Year Sentence for Child Abuse

Tuesday, February 03 2015

A Sand Point man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two children has been sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

James Griffith, 26, was originally facing up to two decades in prison for molesting a seven-year-old boy during a babysitting job back in 2011 -- and for attempting to trade marijuana for sexual favors from a 15-year-old while he was out on release.

Prosecutors agreed to drop several of their charges under a partial plea deal. But they argued that Griffith’s crimes warrant significant jail time.

State prosecutors have dropped their case against two Unalaskans accused of running a major drug operation out of their home and business. Now, it's up to a federal court to determine the outcome.

Tam Nguyen and Thu McConnell were arrested in May after police tied an alleged heroin sale back to their convenience store.

When officers searched the Dutch Harbor Asia shop and the couple’s home on Biorka Drive, they found one of the biggest caches of methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine they had ever seen in Unalaska. The street value was more than $500,000.

Police arrested a man Thursday night for falsely claiming he was going to jump off the South Channel Bridge -- leading responders on a three-hour search.

Robert Alan Cash, 56, has lived in Unalaska off and on for many years. But he’s currently homeless, says police chief Jamie Sunderland.

"He had, in the past few days, been found sleeping in a few other locations," Sunderland says. "Alcohol was a factor."
